Mini CNC Plotter


This event aims to do justice to the engineering adage of learn and improvise on already existing technologies for use in novel applications. One such technology is the CNC Plotter, which utilizes the power of DIY electronics, ordinarily discarded items and one’s ingenuity to craft an elementary plotting device, with applications in the welding and machining industries to name some.

Problem Statement
The objective is to build a CNC plotter which can reproduce sufficiently simple sketches with reasonable accuracy. Since this is a pretty involved project, we aim to conduct a demonstration session wherein participants will be demonstrated on how to build a Mini CNC plotter, by utilising nothing more than discarded DVD drives, Arduino Uno, L293D H-Bridges and Servo motor. Do note that you are free to use any micro-controller board, however for the purpose of demonstration, we will be using Arduino Uno. You will have to construct such a CNC Plotter, and come up with improvements for the same, if possible. The models will be judged on their ability to plot a given sketch accurately.

  1. 2 DVD drives
  2. Arduino Uno (+USB cable)
  3. Breadboard
  4. 2x L293D ICs Motor driver
  5. Mini Servo motor
  6. Plexiglass (30 cm * 30 cm)
  7. Pen/Marker
  8. Laptop
Scoring
The competition involves using a CNC plotter to accurately plot a given sketch. Points will be awarded on how close the plotted image comes to the given sketch.
70%: Image reproducibility
30%: Plotting Speed
Rules
  1. The participants will be organised in teams of 4-6.
  2. The plotting area should be at least 4cm x 4cm.
  3. Participants will have to bring all the materials listed in the above section for attending the demonstration session.
  4. The decision made by the judges will be final and binding.
